Precious Cargo – soj[ourn] for Ever

Walking between Shandy Hall in Coxwold, North Yorkshire and nearby Byland Abbey, following in the footsteps of Laurence Sterne who daily made the same walk. On these walks I photographed the landscape and details therein, getting lost in the spaces, finding few paths, tangled in branches and thought. The space has undoubtedly changed since Sterne made his walks to commune with Cordelia, the spirit of a nun, and to absorb himself in his preoccupation with Eliza Draper, the absent focus of his affections, but in it there remains something of the solitude and harshness that Sterne must have felt within and without his heavy heart and sentimental mind.
